The Story of Ernie and Ann Johnson
Some love stories span decades.
Others span continents, generations and extraordinary chapters of history.
For Ernie and Ann Johnson, their journey together has stretched across more than 70 years, from the air raid shelters of wartime England to the sunny shores of Australia.
Today, they continue that journey at Lake Cathie Manor, where life is calmer, support is always close by, and the focus is simply on enjoying each day together.
Their story was recently featured in FOCUS Magazine, celebrating a life defined by resilience, adventure and family.
From Wartime England to a New Life in Australia
Ernie was born in London in 1931 and grew up in Southall during the Second World War. His childhood memories include sleeping in air raid shelters while bombs fell across London and carrying a gas mask to school every day.
At just 13 years old, he was evacuated to Yorkshire to escape the danger of the V1 and V2 rocket attacks.
Ann’s childhood was equally shaped by the war. Born into a family of ten children, she spent much of her youth helping her mother raise the family while her father served overseas in the army.
Life was simple and often difficult. Ration books replaced supermarkets, and most daily tasks were done by hand.
Yet those early experiences built resilience that would shape the rest of their lives.
A Chance Meeting That Led to 70 Years Together
Despite growing up in the same neighbourhood and attending the same school, Ernie and Ann did not meet until adulthood.
One day Ernie noticed Ann in a neighbouring garden while she was playing with her younger brother. They started talking.
Soon after, he asked her on a date.
Their first date was not dinner or dancing.
It was a wrestling match.
They married in March 1956 and soon began building a life filled with travel, work and family.
The Journey of the “Ten Pound Poms”
In 1964, Ann had an idea that would change their lives forever.
She suggested emigrating to Australia as part of the “Ten Pound Pom” migration program.
They sold their home, packed their belongings and boarded the Fairstar in Southampton for the four and a half week voyage to Sydney.
When they arrived in Sydney Harbour in January 1965, a band played Waltzing Matilda as the ship docked.
For Ernie and Ann, it felt like the beginning of a brand new life.
And in many ways, it was.
Building a Life and a Family
Australia became home.
The couple settled in Sydney where they raised their family and built a life that would eventually grow to include 27 relatives across multiple generations.
Their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren remain a central part of their lives today.
After decades of work, raising children and supporting one another through life’s ups and downs, retirement eventually arrived.
And with it came a new question many families face.
What does the next chapter look like?
