Read more >Love is still in the air for two residents at Tuohy Aged Care Home in Midland, who today celebrated 70 years of wedded bliss.
George and Daphne Mitchell marked the occasion with a special morning tea in a ‘pop-up’ café created especially for them by the home’s staff members. They were joined by two of their five children, Robin and Phillip, as well as their daughter-in-law Jenny. The pair have 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
George was admitted to Tuohy in December, and Daphne joined him just over a month later. Staff at Tuohy ensured the couple were able to share a room.
“They’re still settling in but it’s great that they are here together and able to be in the same room,” Robin said.
When asked for their secret for staying happily married for so long, George said having a good sense of humour was important, as well as 'doing what you’re told'. Daphne said their marriage worked because she won every argument over the years.
George and Daphne met in Sydney, while George was in the army and Daphne was part of the land army, which was created to combat rising labour shortages during World War II. The pair moved to Perth after being discharged from their respective roles.
Tuohy Clinical Nurse Manager Mina Pindolia described George and Daphne as a happy couple who spent a lot of their time together. “They come out for meals together and enjoy watching television together,” she said.
“Tuohy is like a family so we’re so pleased to be able to celebrate this day with them.”
